What's Our Message?
With the launch of the Chamber's all-electronic
weekly newsletter early in the fall, and the recent approval by
the board of directors of a major redesign for our web site, the
Chamber's communication tools are being upgraded, made more
efficient and, we hope, more effective. As we improve the
means, however, we also need to refine our message.

Fine tuning
and streamlining the model
It occurs to me that a Chamber of Commerce
evolution could be similar to that of automobiles.
Years ago there was one
kind, it sort of fit all, but if you wanted to be part, you
bought that one kind. Then a few options came along, and next
were not only one kind, but several. For chambers that might
mean Alliances, or Business Associations, or Leeds groups or a
Chamber of Commerce next door. For cars that meant Ford now
competed with Chrysler or Chevrolet or (remember this?)
Studebaker, or Hudson.

CCC Creates Jobs and
Energy Savings
Clackamas Community College set an
example for responsible use of stimulus dollars aimed at
creating jobs for Oregonians, Speaker of the House Dave Hunt
told college staff during In-service activities Sept. 23.
CCC, along with all the state's community colleges and
universities, received $2.7 million "Go Oregon" stimulus
dollars, half of which the college provided through matching
funds, from the Legislature last spring. The state legislation
provided funds that targeted deferred maintenance needs while
creating jobs in the local economy.
The stimulus monies at CCC were used to fund 29 deferred
maintenance projects, sustaining 125 local jobs and creating 15
new jobs, according to Bill Leach, dean of Campus Services.

About
Brownfields
Funded through
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) grants, Metro works with
local communities to identify potential brownfield sites such as
old gas stations, car dealerships and auto body shops that may
have been contaminated by petroleum-based products. Metro staff
facilitates environmental site assessments to determine the
extent of any contamination and potential clean-up costs.
The program connects property owners and buyers
to potential resources to pay for clean-ups and reaches out to
developers and nonprofit community development organizations to
connect owners of potential brownfield sites with those
interested in cleaning up the sites for redevelopment purposes.
Are you
involved in the sale or purchase of a site with past petroleum
uses? Do you know of a former gas station or a vacant property
in need of restoration in your community? If so, please submit
an application or property referral form to Metro’s Brownfields
Recycling Program, available on
Metro’s Web
site. Apply by Wednesday, Dec. 2 for funding prioritization.
Metro also conducts informational meetings and workshops to
address questions that property owners, developers, or community
members may have. Contact us by
email,
web or
call 503-797-1817 for more information or to be added to our
mailing list for information and events. |
