Rivermark Announces Rebuild of Hawthorne Branch

Rivermark Community Credit Union plans to break ground to rebuild its Hawthorne branch in the next week. The new branch will be built adjacent to the existing branch at 2537 SE Hawthorne Boulevard. The existing branch will remain open during construction. Once the new branch is complete and open for business, the existing building will be demolished, the majority to be recycled, to make room for additional parking.

The new 8,700 square foot building is scheduled to open in the fall of 2010. The Credit Union plans to utilize green building practices when possible and where it makes financial sense. Planned earth-friendly designs include a partial green roof that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Rivermark Community Credit Union, with over $490 million in assets, is a not-for-profit financial cooperative headquartered in Beaverton Oregon. More than 58,000 Oregonians turn to Rivermark for trusted financial advice and superior products and services. Rivermark has grown dramatically since its founding in 1951, providing a full line of financial products and services at its eight branches and online. Membership is open to anyone who lives or works in 11 Oregon counties.

Drive Less Tips for Holiday Shopping

The official launch of the holiday shopping season on Black Friday means great deals and a chance to get all your shopping done all at once. Here are some tips for avoiding all those driving headaches this holiday shopping season:

1. Shop Online Black Friday deals are often available online (some even exclusively online). Many retail stores advertise Black Friday deals online as early as Thursday so you can get a head start. Internet sites, including black-friday.net, bfads.net, theblackfriday.com and blackfriday2009.com, list lots of Black Friday deals. Yet another good resource for finding out "leaked" deals and price matching between stores is Deal News, which also offers a free Black Friday shopping app for iPhone users.

2. Plan Ahead Just like Santa, make a list and check it twice. Think about all the stores you want to hit and plan out the fastest route using online mapping tools like Google Maps. Plus, calling stores ahead of time and checking to see if items are in-stock can also save a car trip or two.

3. Compare Prices While You Shop Use shopping apps like the Deal News Black Friday app or mobile web browsers on your phone to compare prices and avoid driving store to store.

4. Go in a Group With all the parking hassles and driving to do, carpool with friends and neighbors. Dividing the ride can make the experience more enjoyable.

CCC Announces Veterans Affairs Coordinator

Former Marine Greg M. Myers has been named the veterans affairs coordinator at Clackamas Community College. The new coordinator was introduced Wednesday at the grand opening of the Veterans Education and Training (VET) Center at CCC.

Myers served as both an enlisted man and officer in the U.S. Marine Corps in a career that spanned 14 years. He enlisted from Philomath at 17 and after receiving an honorable discharge, completed an associate’s degree at an Oregon community college. He completed a bachelor's degree in business management and earned a commission as an officer in the Marine Corps in 2001.

CCC has substantially increased its services to veterans over the past few years including job training opportunities, credit for prior learning, dedicated counselors to work with veterans, a veterans’ club and financial aid support. The CCC Foundation established the Military Families Scholarship Endowment, providing scholarship support to the families of service members and veterans.

For more information, please contact Greg Myers at 503-594-3442.

Census Bureau to update employment numbers

During the week of Nov. 15, 2009, more than 2,000 Census Bureau field representatives interviewed about 72,000 households across the nation for the monthly Current Population Survey (CPS).  The CPS is co-sponsored by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Census Bureau.

Before the survey was conducted, households selected in the nationwide sample received an informational letter from the Census Bureau director.  Some participants were interviewed by telephone and others were interviewed in person by field representatives who carry official identification.

Every month, Census Bureau field representatives ask selected households questions relevant to the U.S. labor force, such as their employment status, hours worked, earnings, age, sex, race, marital status, educational attainment, occupation and industry.  From these answers come estimates of the unemployment rate released monthly by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

More information about this survey can be found on the website.
