How does a leader grow?

How does a leader grow a business?

Are we born to lead, or do we learn to lead?

As we think about which businesses and their leaders are our models, and have made a positive difference on the imprint of our lives and of those around us, one that comes to mind is Burgerville U.S.A.

The Chamber will feature Jeff Harvey, Burgerville’s CEO, at the State of Leadership luncheon on October 28.

Harvey is responsible for leading all operations for Burgerville including concept development, expansion planning and implementation and team leadership development.  He is accountable for the senior leadership team and jointly responsible for developing and leading company growth strategy with their parent company, The Holland, Inc.’s Chairman, Tom Mears.

Burgerville, with numerous local sites, is a quick-service restaurant that focuses on food that is fresh, local and sustainable. In addition to their specialty milkshakes, they are known locally for their vegetarian options. Harvey has worked with Burgerville as COO since 2004 and assumed the role of CEO in January 2008. Under Harvey’s leadership, same-store sales have increased to double the industry average in the last two years.

Sponsored by Kaiser Permanente, the October luncheon is also the introduction of the current Leadership Clackamas County and Clackamas County Young Leaders’ Project class members and their sponsors. All alumni of both programs are also recognized at the event. This year’s leadership programs are sponsored by American Medical Response, Portland General Electric, Marylhurst University and Clackamas County.

The Wednesday, October 28 luncheon will be held at the Monarch Hotel ballroom, with luncheon service beginning at 11:30.  Cost per person is $20 when paid in advance, and registration is available on the website www.yourchamber.com or through the Chamber offices.
