Clackamas Community College

Military Times has put Clackamas Community College on the list for top college for veterans in its Best for Vets: Colleges 2016 rankings.

The colleges are ranked in three categories: four-year, online and nontraditional, and two-year. Clackamas Community College ranked first in the West and fourth nationally in the two-year category.

Top College for Veterans

The rankings factor in the results of Military Times’ annual survey, a comprehensive school-by-school assessment of veteran and military student services and rates of academic achievement. This project evaluates the many factors that make colleges and universities a good fit for service members, military veterans and their families. More than 600 colleges took part in this year’s survey.

“It’s been amazing to witness how colleges all across higher education have embraced service members and their families,” said Amanda Miller, editor of Military Times’ Best for Vets rankings and special editions. “We award the Best for Vets designation to the very best – the colleges that really are setting the example.”

Military Times’ annual Best for Vets: Colleges survey asks colleges and universities to document an array of services, special rules, accommodations and financial incentives offered to students with military ties; and to describe many aspects of veteran culture on a campus. Military Times also factors in data from the Veterans Affairs and Defense Departments, as well as three Education Department sources: the IPEDS Data Center, College Scorecard data and the Cohort Default Rate Database.

“Our veterans are an integral part of our student body here at Clackamas Community College,” CCC President Joanne Truesdell said. “We have made outreach and service a college commitment in support of our military families and veterans.”

CCC is proud to serve veterans with a range of services, including the VET (Veterans Education and Training) Center on the Oregon City Campus, which is staffed with full-time veteran advocates and co-located with the only Army Strong Community Center in the West.

Veteran services include:

  • Counseling, resources, advising and disability services
  • Emergency need-based grants, textbook exchange
  • Military transcript and training evaluation for CCC credit
  • Student Veterans Club focused on service and peer support
  • Military Families Scholarship Endowment

The Small Business Development Center at CCC offers training for veterans interested in starting or growing their own business.

Clackamas Community College recognizes that the No. 1 issue facing returning veterans is securing education and training for family-wage jobs. That is why CCC established the Military Families Scholarship Endowment, which ensures that service men and women, and their families are taken care of when it comes to their education.

Oregon veterans, military and family members that apply for CCC courses are eligible for scholarships. Qualified candidates include veterans of all eras, family members and active duty personnel, reserves, Oregon National Guard, and survivors of service men and women lost serving our country since 2003. The scholarship endowment funds scholarships, books, fees and other educational support and training. For more information about the endowment and how to contribute, call 503-594-3129.
