Clackamas County Commissioners formally approved a five-year contract with American Medical Response (AMR) to provide emergency and non-emergency ambulance service for Clackamas County.

The vote was 3-2 with Commissioners Jim Bernard, Paul Savas and Martha Schrader voting in support and Chair John Ludlow and Commissioner Tootie Smith, voting no.

The contract with Clackamas County, AMR, and local fire districts includes an option to extend the agreement up to an additional five years based on performance.

    The new contract includes:

    ·       Continued service for the nationally-renowned Reach and Treat Team and the county’s River Rescue Program.

    ·       A 19 percent reduction in transport costs for the term of the contract.

    ·       Systematic commitments to innovation between AMR and local fire districts.

In Feb. 2012, County staff began the process of developing requests for proposals (RFP’s) for ambulance services after Commissioners decided to seek independent bids for service. A year later, RFP’s were formally issued.

In April 2013, one bid was received by the deadline; another bid was not accepted because it was submitted after the deadline had expired. A month later, the County informed AMR that it would pursue a contract for ambulance service.

Earlier this month, Commissioners decided to go forward with a contract with AMR after nearly a year of negotiations.
